About Us Centre Island Cedar Products Ltd. was started in 1981, building lattice top fence panels for the local and US market. Since that time, our product line has developed into a full line of high grade Western Red Cedar outdoor garden products such as garden arbors, lattice, and furniture, just to mention a few. We have produced some products in different wood species like hemlock, fir, and spruce, and our market has grown to include Japan, Europe, and Australia. Our new plant, which opened in 2002, located on central Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, now has a wide range of up-to-date milling equipment. With this equipment, we are capable of custom processing, such as kiln drying, edge gluing, moulding and ripping. Although we build lines of our own product, we also specialize in developing new products or modifying existing ones to fit our customers' specific needs. We are proud of the custom size lattice that has been developed for one of the biggest home center chains in Japan, based on their wishes. We are a small company (average 40 employees), and as a result, we are flexible. We can produce sufficient product to interest medium or even large retailers. On the other hand, we are able to respond to the needs of smaller companies, and build unique product which may give a marketing edge. We welcome new ideas. We sell to trade, industrial customers and retailers only. |

Western Red Cedar In Canada, this tree is confined to British Columbia, being found on the Pacific coast. One of the largest trees of the Pacific region, it grows singly or in scattered patches, never in pure stands of any extent. The Wood The sapwood is that with a light yellow tinge. The heartwood varies in color from light straw to pinkish red to deep, rich brown. The wood is straight-grained and non porous. It has a distinctive aromatic odor. Physical Properties The wood is one of the lightest in weight of all the commercially important coniferous species. it is a soft wood of moderate strength, but with excellent weather-resistant properties. The heartwood, which contains large amounts of extractives, is classified as highly resistant to insects and decay. Western Red Cedar has a proven track record for durability: totems up to 400 years old can be found on the Pacific Coast and cedar shakes on roofs last for decades without any protection. Working Properties Western Red Cedar dries readily with very little shrinkage, and exhibits exceptional dimensional stability in service. It has excellent working qualities, and machines to a smooth, satiny finish. Completely non-resinous, it has good gluing properties, low to moderate nail and screw holding ability, and takes paints and stains well. If left unprotected, Western Red Cedar will slowly change to a silvery grey. |
